Age Spot Treatment

What are Age Spots?

Many people have age spots or otherwise known as “liver spots” or lentigines. These spots appear any place on the body as round flat brown or black patches of skin. These spots can cause some to have lowered self-esteem which will push them to have these areas treated. The spots are usually more prevalent as we age and mostly caused by overexposure to sunlight. The body will produce excess melanin (the pigment which gives skin color) in the affected area and result in these spots. Of course, the more sunlight exposure the more spots will appear. It is always recommended to have an annual skin check by a dermatologist to be sure these are not cancerous as well as for overall skin health prior to any sort of treatment for age spots.

What Are the Treatments for Age Spots?

There are many types of treatments for age spots. More commonly used is topical creams and lotions such as Retinoids, AlphaHydroxy acid (AHA) lotions and hydroquinone to lighten the skin over time. All of the treatments can be prescribed or performed in the office with little to no downtime.
