What causes skin laxity?

Skin laxity is a condition caused by many factors. Most times, this condition is genetic; however, many other factors can cause laxity to worsen. These factors can be both intrinsic (natural causes) or extrinsic (outside causes). These influences may include natural aging of the skin, weight gain or loss, environmental factors such as sun exposure, smoking, poor diet, and stress.

Skin laxity also often accounts for eye puffiness and dark circles under the eyes due to loss of collagen. The most common areas for laxity are around the jowls, neck, jawline, and arms. With childbirth or significant weight loss, laxity commonly occurs in the abdominal area. However, skin laxity can develop in any part of the body.

Who is a good candidate for skin laxity treatments?

Good candidates for treatment are men and women who struggle with saggy skin around the face, neck, and more. They’ve often tried serums and lotions to bring a youthful bounce back to tired, overstretched skin but have had little success.

Women and men who still have a small amount of skin elasticity usually have the best results with our nonsurgical skin tightening treatments. Laxity treatments trigger increased collagen production in loose areas, boosting the body’s natural rejuvenation processes.

What treatments can I use to tighten loose skin?

Surgical treatments may be necessary if laxity is severe, but many cases can be solved with a nonsurgical approach. The most common options are radiofrequency treatments such as Thermage®.

Thermage

Thermage is a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure used to tone and tighten skin. It can be safely used on multiple areas of the body, such as the face, neck, midsection, legs, and more. It can also even out bumpy, dimpled skin and temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite. Clinically proven to smooth skin and improve its texture, Thermage usually requires little to no downtime.

Loose, saggy skin may be a common part of life, but that doesn’t mean you have to feel self-conscious about your body. If you’re interested in nonsurgical skin tightening treatments, request a consultation with our Houston dermatologists and learn more about your treatment options.
