What Causes Warts?

Various strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) cause warts to develop. When the virus infects the top layer of skin, a wart can be formed as a painless, fleshy growth. Warts are usually about the size of a pinhead to a pea, and they may have black dots called “seeds.” Warts can grow on any part of the body and are often skin-colored and rough, but they can also be dark, flat, or smooth.

HPV viruses are contagious and spread by contact with the wart or something that touched the wart. Skin-to-skin contact is the most common culprit, such as via handshakes or hugs.

What Are the Treatments for Warts?

Wart treatment can include topical medications and removal through medical procedures. They are often treated with liquid nitrogen to “freeze” and eliminate the unwanted tissue. In severe cases, a few surgical options may offer the best solutions for removing warts. You can discuss these options with your dermatologist.
