Why Does Laser Hair Reduction Take Multiple Sessions? Understanding the Hair Growth Cycle

The reason laser hair reduction takes several visits has less to do with the strength of the laser than with the way hair grows. Hair follicles move through different growth phases, and only a portion are in the stage most responsive to laser energy at any one time. For patients in Houston and Greater Houston, Texas, our team at DermSurgery Associates plans laser hair reduction around hair color, skin tone, and body area. Jon K. Stern, MD, FAAD is a board-certified dermatologist offering laser hair reduction among his services.

Why Can’t One Session Treat Every Hair?

Each follicle moves through three main stages: anagen, the active growth phase; catagen, a short transition phase; and telogen, the resting phase.

Laser hair reduction works best during anagen, when the hair is actively growing and connected to the follicle. The laser’s light is absorbed by pigment in the hair and converted to heat, damaging the follicle so future growth is reduced.

Because neighboring hairs are not all in anagen at the same time, one appointment cannot reach every follicle at its most responsive stage. Waiting between visits allows another group of hairs to enter active growth.

Why Are Laser Hair Reduction Visits Spaced Weeks Apart?

Most patients need several appointments spaced about four to six weeks apart. The timing can vary because growth cycles differ from one body area to another.

Hair characteristics also affect response. Darker hair generally absorbs laser energy more readily because it contains more melanin, while blonde or gray hair may respond less predictably. Skin tone is another consideration when selecting settings and technology.

Because these characteristics vary, our laser treatments include multiple technologies rather than relying on one device for every patient. Alma Veil is one system available through our practice that may be used for unwanted facial and body hair.

Will I Ever Need Maintenance?

Laser hair reduction is best understood as long-term hair reduction rather than a promise that every strand will be gone forever. Some regrowth can occur, and occasional maintenance may be useful.

The treated area, hormonal changes, hair color and coarseness, and how follicles cycle can all affect the outcome. Instead of aiming for a fixed number of visits, we adjust the plan according to how the area responds as the series progresses.
