DermSurgery Associates is proud to welcome Dr. Young Kwak to our expert family of talented dermatologists. His passion for and extensive experience in dermatologic surgery, Mohs surgery, and reconstruction make him a great addition to the team. Dr. Kwak is joining the staff at our Willowbrook location, specializing in skin cancer screenings, biopsies, skin care and Mohs micrographic surgery, lesion removal and excision, and scar treatment.
An Atlanta native, Dr. Kwak is one of three sons of South Korean immigrants who arrived in the United States in the 1970s. He has come to us through Georgia and Alabama, completing his undergrad education at University of Georgia. He graduated medical school at Medical College of Georgia and completed his residency at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Through hard work and dedication, he earned recognition such as Resident Intern of the year, Eagle award for community service, and the role of Chief resident.
Dr. Kwak arrived in Houston in July of 2017 on a Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital, where he trained under Dr. Leonard H. Goldberg MD, FRCP, FAAD and Dr. Arash Kimyai-Asadi MD.
Dr. Kwak’s care philosophy is to maintain a positive and patient-centered approach, emphasizing patient empathy. It is important that his patients have the best experience possible.
One of Dr. Kwak’s areas of interest is alternative medicines. Though trained in the west, he grew up in an East Asian family and had a lifetime of exposure to Eastern medicine. He has a strong belief that Western and Eastern medicine need not be mutually exclusive, but can work together in harmony.
Dr. Kwak’s resume is impressive. In addition to earning a top-level education, he has participated in several long-term research projects and co-authored industry journal articles and contributed to medical textbook chapters. These projects have informed his compassionate approach to treating his patients. One study explored pain and the way it affects the patient’s experience.
Dr. Kwak also cowrote an article investigating rashes resulting from drugs. He has a clear understanding that every prescription, herbal medicine and supplement has an effect, and believes that those in the healing arts need to continuously enhance their knowledge of potentially harmful aspects of treatments they may provide their patients.
In addition to his accomplished career, outside of the office, Dr. Kwak enjoys a busy and full family life. The father of an active three-year-old son and husband of a pharmacist, he also finds time for diverse hobbies and interests that include rock climbing, working on cars, craft beers, ethnic foods, building computers, and cryptocurrencies. From a military family, he values a strong work ethic, self-reliance, survival skills, patriotism and loving his fellow brothers and sisters in this world.
