Dr. Leonard Goldberg of DermSurgery Associates in Houston has received the 2016-2017 Houston Methodist GME Faculty Teaching Award. The latest in a string of prestigious awards and recognitions bestowed upon the physician, this one is special in that the individuals who selected him were residents and fellows from Houston Methodist Hospital that he has personally trained over the past year.
Dr. Goldberg has been mentoring residents and fellows since 1985. At Houston Methodist, he serves as the Clinical Service Chief for Dermatology for Houston Methodist Hospital as well as the Program Director for the Mohs Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology program.
The GME Faculty Teaching Award is given to leading medical educators who demonstrate both a passion for their fields of endeavor as well as the ability to impart often highly technical information in a way that students can readily understand and apply. Dr. Goldberg has held numerous academic teaching positions throughout his career including:
- Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Chief of Dermatologic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, Houston, Texas
- Associate Professor of Clinical Dermatology & Chief of Dermatologic Surgery, also at Baylor
- Adjunct Professor, Division of Dermatology, Department of Internal Medicine, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
- Clinical Professor, Department of Dermatology, Weill Medical College of Cornell University
- Clinical Professor in Dermatology, University of Texas Medical School at Houston, Texas
Career Achievement Award
In 2016, Dr. Goldberg was honored with the 2016 Award for Career Achievement from the American College of Mohs Surgery. Mohs Surgery is a unique process that treats skin cancer by removing and examining skin, layer by layer. Named for Frederic E. Mohs, a physician from Wisconsin who developed and first performed the procedure in 1936, Mohs surgery has proven highly effective and has become a staple of skin cancer treatment worldwide.
Dr. Goldberg is a recognized authority on Mohs surgery. Along with performing the procedure and teaching it to fellow physicians, he has authored pieces on Mohs surgery and related topics for close to 300 professional publications.
